Steel-cut oats can be made on the stove in about 30-40 minutes; however, that doesn't always turn out well for us! They are so easy to make in the slow cooker. They are great for breakfast and even a light dinner! Steel-cut oats are a great source of vitamins, protein, fiber and more. They take longer to cook than rolled oats, but many people prefer their sweet, nutty taste.
Ingredients
-
2 apples, peeled or unpeeled, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
-
1-1/2 cups milk (options: low-fat milk or almond milk)
-
1-1/2 cups water
-
1 cup uncooked steel-cut oats
-
1-2 tablespoons brown sugar
-
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
-
1/4 teaspoon salt
-
Optional garnishes: chopped nuts, raisins, additional milk or cream
Directions
Coat inside of slow cooker with cooking spray.
Add all ingredients (except optional toppings) to slow cooker.
Stir, cover, and cook on low for 5-6 hours (slow cooker times can vary).
Recipe Note
Spoon oatmeal into bowls; add optional toppings, if desired.
Simple and healthy! Don’t over sweeten. Steel-cut oats are good with minimal sugar — they don’t need to be sweet like a dessert.
Feeding your family a warm healthy breakfast doesn’t have to keep you in the kitchen all morning! You can make this while you sleep (using a slow cooker with a timer or make it when you won’t be sleeping more than 5-6 hours).
Also, it makes a great light and healthy dinner and is a very inexpensive meal -- Enjoy!
